Game Elements

In this week's reading task we dove a bit further into what it really takes to design a game. This week's topic was what elements does a game contain.

These elements range from you, the player, to all the other systems that are in the game such as the game's objective or objectives, the narrative and its theme, the rules of the game and how does the player interact with your game.

This all is very interesting from not just a game design stand point but also from a player stand point. As a player of a game I think it is important to ask yourself how your actions impact the game world your character is living in.(https://www.ginx.tv/en/video-games/new-world-influence-exploit-explained-bug-or-feature).

I also think that the narrative is very important, to create a good one as a designer and to enjoy it and fully grasp the what the designer is trying to tell through the game's story.(https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/08/03/god-of-war-narrative-linear-storytelling/).

Probably the building blocks of a game are its core systems, these will build the foundation of how your game works. As a designer it is important to create a good system for your game, for example a good progression system that feels rewarding, and as a player understanding the system and its possible flaws are just as important. Game Devs are constantly shouted at online by players to change some of their faulty game systems. A good example of this is 'World of Warcraft' developers finally listening to player feedback and removing some of the hated system from the most recent expansion 'Shadowlands'.
